Upwork was founded 18 months after Elance and oDesk announced its merger to become Elance-oDesk on December 18, 2013. Odysseas Tsatalos and Stratis Karamanlakis created oDesk in 2003. Beerud Sheth and Srini Anumolu established Elance in 1999. The oDesk platform was updated and renamed with the introduction of Upwork, and the firm stated that the Elance platform will be phased out within a couple of years, culminating in a single freelancing marketplace. The service went down in early September 2015, prompting CEO Stephane Kasriel to offer an apology. This prompted the creation of an Upwork Status page to provide freelancers and clients with more transparency. On 3 May 2016, the firm announced that the service fee for freelancers will be changed from a flat rate of 10% to a “sliding service fee” of 5% to 20% based on total lifetime billings with each client: 20% for the first $500 billed to the client across all contracts, 10% for total billings with the client between $500.01 and $10,000, and 5% for total billings with the client exceeding $10,000. It has 14 million members in 180 countries and $1 billion in yearly freelancer billings as of March 2017. Since its inception in 1999, the business has received a total of $168 million in private equity financing across ten rounds.
Over two decades ago, Upwork pioneered a new way of working by assisting companies in finding more flexibility and connecting talent with more possibilities.
Our goal of creating economic possibilities for individuals to live better lives has brought us a long way. As a consequence, we’ve evolved into the world’s job marketplace, where every day companies of all sizes and independent individuals from across the world join together to do amazing things.
Upwork, like so many others, has made a significant effect on my life. I joined this business as a member of the product team and have since learned what makes this platform really functional: the connections.
We are aware of what you do.
I’ve personally seen the enthusiasm and dedication that each user brings to their work here. Whether it’s a short powerpoint presentation or a multi-year development project, both Upwork talent and our customers care about producing great work because they like what they do.
That’s exactly how we intended it. Our work marketplace connects our customers’ objectives with the goals of talent on Upwork, resulting in better results and everyone growing in the same direction. You’ll discover resources to help you improve your abilities, grow your company, and obtain the power and independence you need to succeed.
Upwork serves as your labour.
If you’re a customer looking to get things done, use this workforce of independent people to develop quicker and change your company. If you’re an independent talent who has come here to fulfil your potential, know that you’re a valued and important member of someone’s team.
We make work more enjoyable.
We understand your vision, and everything we do is an attempt to assist you in making the connections that will bring that vision into reality, by constructing your Virtual Talent Bench of trustworthy individuals.
The effect is both economic and human, both in the short and long term. When you discover the proper individuals, you stop working just to make ends meet and start working strategically.
That is when genuine opportunity presents itself.
I can confidently state that the Upwork team – the team that serves you, the talent, and you, the client – is still motivated by our goal to provide economic opportunity for our employees all around the globe.’
